This temple is called the Durga Maa Temple, but it’s not actually dedicated to Goddess Durga. It was originally built for Surya Deva, the Sun God. However, it came to be known as the Durga Maa Temple after a fort or Durg was constructed on top of it in the 13th century. The temple itself has a unique design. The sanctum or Garbha Gruha is U-shaped or semi-spherical, while the mandapa or the hall is square, which is rare in Indian temples. It’s actually a temple complex with many other temples nearby. The temple is a great example of Badami Chalukya architecture. Aihole, where the temple is located, was an important site in ancient India and is often called the “Cradle of Indian Architecture” because of its significance in temple design. This ancient site has over 125 stone temples, each showcasing various architectural styles from the 4th to the 12th century. Aihole was the first capital of the Chalukya dynasty, which ruled parts of southern and central India from the 6th to the 12th century. This temple is the largest of the many temples in Aihole. If you haven’t been to Aihole, it’s worth a visit! You can also see other ancient temple sites nearby, like Badami and Pattadakal in Karnataka, which you can easily add to your travel plans. #templesofindia #templesofsouthindia #hindu #hinduism #karnataka #jaimatadi #jaimatadi❤ #templesofkarnataka #sanatandharma
