We're back in Chiang Mai, Thailand to celebrate the festivals of Yi Peng and Loy Krathong. These twin festivals usually take place in November - they take place on the 2nd full moon of the lunar calendar.
We spent the first day of the festivities around Old Town Chiang Mai, kicking things off at the Three Kings Monument, and then we moved towards Wat Phan Tao to participate in lighting hundreds of oil lamps around the statue of the Buddha. We made our way to Phae Gate as the massive parade started winding its way towards the Municipality Office near the Ping River. It was absolutely spectacular!! We ended our evening with a couple of beers and lots of fireworks at the Mae Kha Canal.
The next day we went for the Khom Loy Sky Lantern Festival which was like a dream come true!! It was like the craziest mela we've ever been to! There was everything you could imagine and more - food, dancing, music, muay thai, fire dancing, a live orchestra, souvenirs etc. etc. And the most anticipated part of the evening was definitely lighting up the lanterns and sending them towards the heavens! It is really something to witness!!
