It turned out my hotel was located in what's known as ASEAN Square in Taichung, the Southeast Asian area of the city. ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian nations which includes Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, the most prominent groups in this area. Many people from these countries are working in Taiwan, and you can find many of their foods and goods in this area.
I was feeling quite tired this day and opted to stay close to my hotel, visiting the local Family Mart for a breakfast of coffee, noodles and a sweet potato. A bit of admin in the morning and then a trip to the local ATM to collect some cash. In the afternoon I just hung out in ASEAN Square beaneath my hotel. I met a group of locals having a KFC party and chatted to them for a while, nice people on their day off but with very limited English.
I also met the owner of my hotel that day who gave me a free breakfast voucher for the following day.
If you visit Taichung and want to try food from Southeast Asia you'll find a really great selection in this area at very affordable prices. I think the actual building I was staying in is called ASEAN Plaza and contains a shopping mall for basic clothes and electronics, a food court, KTV, hotels, coffee shops, it's a real mixed bag. The surrounding streets are also stuffed with restaurants, probably a good place to try Vietnamese food.
