Renae Leith-Manos shares her discerning perspective on one of her favourite South East Asian hotels, The Siam, Bangkok—a boutique retreat that redefines elegance and tranquility in the bustling heart of Thailand’s capital.
With only 38 rooms, the family owned Siam exudes exclusivity and attracts some of the world's most famous people including Mick Jagger, David Beckham, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep.
Bangkok is a sensory feast—a city where heat and humidity intermingle with a vibrant juxtaposition of modernity and tradition. With over 20 million residents propelling its ceaseless energy, it’s a destination that never sleeps. Yet, amidst this urban whirlwind, The Siam offers a gracious, serene refuge and escape.
From the moment you step into its foyer, The Siam transports you to a world of design, luxury and style. Its impeccably designed interiors flow effortlessly, creating a black and white, flood lit ambiance of understated luxury.
It’s as if a timeless Indochine bar has been reimagined with contemporary sophistication, each space outshining the last. American Hotel designer Bill Bensley is a star of South East Asian Hotel Design, and this is one of his greatest works. He even has a gallery here filled with his paintings - his latest creative passion.
The food and beverage outlets are outstanding, and every guest has breakfast included which is one of Bangkok's best. It is one of Bangkok's healthiest, tastiest and is truly international. It is served in a Thai style construct, right next to the river, with boundless amounts of coffee, and fresh, wholesome food. The Thai dishes on offer including incredible satays were Renae's pick.
The Siam’s architecture embraces restraint in some areas, without sacrificing opulence, achieving a perfect balance that soothes the senses.
Located along the Chao Phraya River, the hotel’s private pier serves as an idyllic setting for sunset cocktails. The curated collection of antique Thai artefacts, vintage ceramics, and museum-worthy treasures—like a Han Dynasty terracotta horse-drawn wagon—adds an unparalleled uniqueness to its aesthetic.
Renae recounts an instance when the reception staff swiftly replaced a broken purchase by house keeping within the hour, exemplifying the team’s commitment to guest satisfaction.
The sprawling Opium Spa in the basement at The Siam offers a world-class retreat within the city.
Named the best urban spa by Condé Nast Traveler in 2015, its traditional Thai massages and rejuvenating facials are Renae’s go-to treatments when in Bangkok. For a unique cultural experience, the Sak Yant tattoos by a master monk add an intriguing spiritual dimension to the spa’s offerings. The Siam offers an adventure of the senses, and is so much more than simply a hotel stay.
