These group of six islands came to worldwide prominence when one of them, Ko Phi Phi Le, was used as a location for the 2000 Film The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. James Bond movies The Man with the Golden Guns and Tomorrow never dies we’re also filmed on another one of these islands. So were two of my favorite movies Heaven and Earth and Around The World in 80 Days.

The name "Phi Phi" (pronounced "pee pee") for the Phi Phi Islands originates from Malay, where it was originally "Pulao Pi ah Pi". This name refers to the mangrove trees, specifically the "Pokok Api-Api" or "fiery tree" found on the islands.

The waters surrounding the Phi Phi Islands are filled with exotic marine life, including docile leopard sharks, and snorkelling and diving day trip rival lounging on the beach as top activities on Koh Phi Phi.

The man featured in the last two photos, the captain of our boat is credited with saving many lives when he was nine years old. He alerted people on the beach of huge wave approaching the shore when the worst Tsunami hit on December 26, 2004.
