ABOUT THE MANILA CATHEDRAL
The Manila Cathedral, officially the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, has undergone eight iterations since its founding in 1581, reflecting the resilience of the Filipino people. The first cathedral, a simple nipa and bamboo structure, was destroyed by a typhoon and fire, while the second, made of wood and stone, succumbed to an earthquake in 1600. The third, built in 1614, collapsed in the 1645 Luzon Earthquake, and the fourth (1654–1681), a more elaborate Baroque structure, was heavily damaged in the 1863 earthquake. The fifth cathedral (1870–1879), featuring a grand dome, was destroyed by the 1880 Luzon Earthquake, and the sixth (1888–1945), in Neo-Romanesque style, was reduced to rubble during World War II's Battle of Manila. Rebuilt in 1954 with modern reinforcements, the seventh cathedral sustained damage in the 1968 earthquake but was restored. The current eighth cathedral, reopened in 2014 after extensive restoration, combines traditional aesthetics with modern structural upgrades and serves as a significant religious and cultural landmark in the Philippines.
