The West Bengal government announced that most tram routes will soon be discontinued due to traffic congestion and the city’s narrow roads. Kolkata is the only city in India where trams still operate, representing a significant part of its heritage.
Recently, I traveled on the tram, and it was an incredible experience. It felt like riding a train on the road, taking you through old parts of Kolkata, showing daily life and nostalgic streets. The ticket costs just 7 rupees from start to finish, which is really affordable.
Near the tram depot, there’s also a tram museum open to the public—a must-visit if you’re interested in the history and evolution of trams. The entry fee is only 20 rupees. If you visit Kolkata, you can also experience the famous yellow Ambassador taxi for a touch of nostalgia.
