Earthquake Tremors Shake Thai Tourism Confidence

The recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has sparked fears among international tourists visiting Thailand, particularly after tremors were felt in Bangkok. Hotel check-outs surged by 10%, and the Thai Hotels Association warns of a potential 10-15% drop in tourist arrivals over the next two weeks. With Songkran approaching, these concerns couldn’t come at a worse time for the sector.

Tourism is a vital economic engine in Thailand, contributing around 13% of GDP and employing one-fifth of the workforce. While structural damage was limited, including a fatal construction site collapse in Bangkok, the psychological impact may linger.

Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong has urged calm, assuring tourists of their safety while audits of hotels and attractions are being conducted to rebuild trust. Chinese tourists, once a major demographic, remain cautious due to longstanding regional safety concerns. Despite the tremor, year-to-date visitor numbers reached 8.9 million, though a sustained drop could jeopardise 2025’s forecasted target of 38.1 million.

Thailand must act quickly to manage perceptions and ensure travellers feel safe again.
