In 1942, the war became truly global. Axis forces continued their expansion across Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific. German troops reached Stalingrad and the Caucasus, while the Allies began to reorganize. The Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom strengthened their coordination, marking a turning point.

Operation Torch opened the first major Allied offensives in North Africa, while battles raged in the Pacific islands and the frozen Eastern Front. Political tensions also played a role, especially around Vichy France and high-level strategic decisions.

At Stalingrad, the Red Army launched a major counteroffensive, encircling the German 6th Army. By the end of 1942, the balance of power was starting to shift, setting the stage for the next phase of the war.
