Mihinthalaya – The Birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka

Mihintale is a sacred site in Sri Lanka, renowned as the place where Buddhism was first introduced to the island. It was here, in 247 BCE, that the Indian monk Arahat Mahinda son of Emperor Ashoka met King **Devanampiya Tissa** and preached the teachings of the Buddha. This historic encounter marked the beginning of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Today, Mihintale is an important pilgrimage site, featuring ancient stupas, rock inscriptions, and monastic ruins. Visitors can climb the 1,840 steps leading to the summit, where they will find breathtaking views and the iconic Mihintale Dagoba.The site also includes the Aradhana Gala (Meditation Rock) the Maha Stupa and the Kantaka Chetiya, reflecting its deep spiritual and historical significance.

Mihintale remains a symbol of peace, wisdom, and the Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka.
