Maya Bay, made world famous by the Leonardo Dicaprio movie"The Beach" . It was not the original location for the movie ,we will be visiting that beach later on in the Backpacking Thailand series .
Maya Bay is located on the uninhabited island of Phi Phi Leh in the Krabi province of Thailand.I have visited Maya Bay many times over the years. I first visited Maya Bay in 2011on a day trip from Phuket and up until that time it was easily the most beautiful place I had ever seen.Back then the tour boats and long tails used to sail into the bay and anchor off the beach. You could also snorkel in the bay which was full of colourful corals and hundreds of different species of tropical fish but very few sharks and it was one of the best snorkelling spots in South East Asia. Before the bay became so popular with tourists it was full of nursing Black Tip Reef Sharks but as more boats came, the sharks started to gradually disappear . Then.over time the bay just became too popular with tourists and the place lost a lot of its magic.when I returned to Maya Bay for my fourth visit in 2018 I could not believe what I was seeing. the bay was absolutely full with bigger tour boats and hundreds of long tail boats . there were so many boats that you could no longer snorkel because it was too dangerous, the coral had all but disappeared along with most of the fish and what coral was left was dead . The beach was also in a bad way from the thousands of daily tourists packed onto it .
A couple of years later, the Thai Government decided to close down Maya Bay for a few years to give nature a chance to heal itself. When they eventually did reopen new rules were introduced. All boats were banned from the bay along with swimming and snorkelling. Access to the bay was only possible from a small dock on the other side of the island which helped reduce the numbers of people and the harmful effect on this environment.
When I returned to Maya Bay this year I was amazed at the change.Shutting it down for a few years had a very positive impact, The greenery on the beach had started to flourish again, some coral had started to grow back and the bay was full of nursing Black Tip Reef Sharks for the first time in years.
If you plan on visiting Thailand then do not pass on a chance to see this place. I would recommend hiring a private long tail boat on Koh Phi Phi Don and visiting Maya Bay and Phi Leh Lagoon early in the morning to avoid the crowds.The boat hire is around 3000 Thai Baht for a half day .
